SP46 Proceedings from a combined "paper symposium" and "workshop session" on concrete proportioning technology held at an ACI annual convention. Nine papers presented at the paper symposium deal with proportioning techniques and technology for application in pumping concrete, gapgraded aggregate concrete, mass concrete, proportioning with admixtures, fIy ash, and other pozzolans, and high strength concrete. Four papers from the workshop session cover history of proportioning, normal weight concrete, and no slump concrete.

A series of formulas are presented for proportioning concrete for a specified unit weight without trial mixes. These formulas cover both the case when the amount of mixing water is specified along with the required cement content, and the case when an adequate workability is required without any specific water content.

Presents basic principles of proportioning shrinkage compensating concrete mixtures using currently available expansive cements and relates them to proportioning mixtures using Type I cement. Properties which are common to all expansive cements and their differences are discussed. Conditions under which slump loss may occur when using some expansive cements are reviewed and methods for adjusting mixing water to compensate are given. Recommendations for the use of admixtures are made and importance of proper curing and adeqate internal restraint are discussed briefly.

The history of concrete mix proportioning starts with the "recipe" for manufacture of the first batch of concrete. The complex nature of concrete contributed to the wide variety of methods for arriving at the "best mix." . . .Three ACI standards are in use today which include developments in normal weight concrete, lightweight concrete and no-slump concrete.
