Abstract:
Based on the continuum method of analysis, closed form solutions are obtained for the stresses and deflections of a coupled shear wall resting on flexible foundation. Both vertical and rotational foundation compliances are taken into consideration. The loadings considered include a point load at the top, a uniformly distributed load and a triangularly distributed load along the height of the building. An example is worked out in detail to show the effect of a flexible foundation on the stresses and deflection of the wall. The various degrees of foundation flexiblity are then related to common foundation conditions encountered in practice.
