Abstract:
In this study, the folded-plate analogy for barrel shells is used as an alternative to the elasticity method to demonstrate special design problems. First, the solution for a typical interior barrel is compared to that of the elastic solution. Then, several design problems are shown, including the increase in moments in a haunched barrel shell, the effect of unbalanced live load, the distribution of bending moments in gothic-arch-shaped shell cross sections, the analysis of single barrels without edge beams using transverse ribs, and the design of long-span vaults including the analysis for geometric nonlinear stresses. The folded-plate analogy is demonstrated to be a valuable tool in the design of barrel shells.
