Abstract:
Long used for post-cooling of mass concrete in dams, embedded pipes can be an economical alternative for cooling large structural members during hot weather. PVC tubing has been successfully used for embedded cooling pipes. Calculations, based on the shape and volume of concrete, determine the amount of heat that must be removed to control the temperature differential between the core of the mass and the surfaces. From there, the number of pipes and their location can be determined. A case study is presented involving the construction of a large cross beam between two bridge piers in Florida.
