Abstract:
Refactory concretes are defined and a brief discussion of the calcium aluminate cements which form their hydraulic bond is followed by a description of the early work which probably led to the first recorded use of a refactory concrete. A short historical account is given of the development (and some interesting uses) of refractory castable mixes before and after World War II. Attention is drawn to some of the basic differences in properties between refactory brickwork and refractory concrete, and to the value of refractory concrete for experimental or pilot-scale development work.
