Abstract:
This paper focuses on the use of rapid-setting controlled low-strength material (CLSM) for use in bridge approach applications. The rapid-setting CLSM used in this study was unique in that it contained no portland cement, relying solely on the rapid reaction between a Class C fly ash meeting ASTM C 618 specifications and water to obtain rapid setting and hardening. These types of mixtures are ideal for fast-track backfill construction, allowing for paving over the poured CLSM in a matter of hours. This study focused initially on diagnosing the cause of failure in an earlier field application of rapid-setting CLSM for a bridge approach application. After diagnosing the cause of this failure, the research then focused on developing optimized materials and mixture proportions that led to the subsequent successful use of rapid-setting CLSM in bridge approach applications in San Antonio, Tex.
