Abstract:
Parking structures are generally open, unheated, and undergo thermal changes, which, in turn, cause deformations and distress in the framing elements, affecting structural durability, appearance, and the concrete’s ability to withstand its design loads. Though considerable laboratory testing has been done in an attempt to gain understanding of the thermal effects, a close correlation between test-based movements and service performances of full-size structures should not be expected. This paper reviews the factors affecting thermal movements in concrete parking facilities. A field study conducted to measure the temperature effects on full size parking structures subjected to the Midwest’s climatic swings is reported. Design recommendations are presented to assess thermal movements in post-tensioned and precast parking facilities.
