Abstract:
Recent fires have led to a new provision in the 2021 edition of the International Building Code, requiring automatic sprinkler systems throughout buildings classified as parking garages where the fire area of the open parking garage exceeds 48,000 ft2 (4460 m2). Related issues are discussed, including greatly increased use of plastic components and lithium-ion batteries in vehicles, fire-resistance requirements, and fire effects.
