Abstract:
The article discusses the seismic safety of existing concrete dams and demonstrates why the probability of a concrete dam failing due to seismic shaking is extremely remote. It focuses on historical evolution of seismic design and analysis, lessons learned from previous earthquakes, causes of seismic induced damage, seismic safety assessment in the United States, and seismic failure modes for different dam types.
