Abstract:
Minimizing traffic congestion and delays is often a top priority for transportation construction or renovation projects. An innovation that promises to help reach this goal is the use of full-depth precast concrete deck panel systems comprising panels that are shipped to the site, installed on in-place girders using medium capacity cranes, and rapidly connected to each other and to the girders through shear keys. The system eliminates the time and potential site disturbance associated with formwork, placement of reinforcement, concrete placement, and curing. In some applications, it is even possible to perform deck replacement in small overnight stages while reopening the bridge to daytime traffic. New guidelines for these systems are provided.
