Abstract:
The behavior of a reinforced concrete plate edge-column connection was studied experimentally with the aid of direct models. Four different scale models representing part of a reinforced concrete flat plate structure were used to simulate the behavior of a plate edge-column connection of a prototype structure. Results indicated size effects in punching loads for models smaller than one-quarter scale. Deformations were found to be unaffected by size effects. When compared to the provisions of "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete (ACI 318-77)" the results of the one-half-scale test indicated that the magnitude of the unbalanced moment was smaller and the punching loads were larger by factors of about 6 and 2, respectively.
