Abstract:
The use of the wide column model for analyzing shearwall cores is considered in the study. Although it appears to perform satisfactorily when used to represent shearwall structures in which shear deformations are negligible (for example, plane shearwalls or open section shearwall cores), it can perform very poorly for wall structures in which shear deformations are significant, such as closed or partially closed section cores subjected to torsion. In such structures the resulting displacements are stresses may be grossly inaccurate. The wide column frame is therefore not recommended for the analysis of closed or partially closed shearwall cores. As alternatives, other frame analogies have been developed which account for shear deformations and which give results of an accuracy comparable with finite element analyses.
