Abstract:
To achieve design excellence, a designer and other members of a staff who share responsibility for bridge design must be proficient in the three major aspects of design: science, technology, and aesthetics. These three subjects are reviewed in this article which examines and summarizes some of the direction necessary for aesthetic considerations. With respect to aesthetics, many of the world's recognized authorities on bridges were involved in the drafting of two books, Esthetics on Concrete Bridge Design and Bridge Aesthetics Around the World, intended to provide bridge designers and others a background on which to base evaluations and opinions.
