Abstract:
Exterior finishes on completed buildings can cover the true character and behavior of the structure. One fallacy in construction is that small buildings have insignificant foundation considerations and do not require the construction care that would be needed for a larger building. Poor attention to foundation design and construction continues to plague this industry. Foundation construction is as important as design and must be coordinated with the findings of the geotechnical engineer. Foundation failures are frequent, but often go unpublicized. Authors present a case study and field investigation of a foundation problem in a mid-sized building.
