Abstract:
This computer-based study examines the behavior of precast panel shearwalls with nonlinear-behaving joints for conditions simulating progressive collapse. These conditions are modeled by assuming static failure of individual panels at various levels within a 12-story prototype structure. Following such local panel collapse, the nonlinear behavior of the damaged system is investigated by means of a parametric study. The results indicate that precast walls higher than 12 stories require a ductility capacity in the vertical joints that exceeds the available performance of headed-stud mechanical connectors. Furthermore, use of vertical ties produces only marginal improvement of overall structural integrity following local panel failure, whereas prestressing could be a dangerous contributor to progressive collapse.
