Abstract:
A new mix design method called Progressive Mix Proportioning was formulated and tested in the laboratory. The new method is based on the progressive proportioning of the integral parts of the mix - the cement paste, the mortar, and the concrete. A simplified form of the method was also developed that requires no empirical data. The current specified range of sand gradings as set out in ASTM C 33 were found to be overly restrictive because good strong placeable concretes were produced using fine and coarse sands with grad-ings which fell outside the specified range. The method is applicable to proportioning concrete mixes with this wider range of sand grad-ings.
