Abstract:
The need for additional maximum-security jail space has become critical. Federal agencies as well as regional and local municipalities share a common objective - building these structures as quickly, effectively, and inexpensively as possible without compromising security. The Rikers Island addition is an example of how these goals can be achieved. The project--a $100 million addition to the existing Gorge R. Vierno Center is the first correctional facility in New York City history to be constructed using precast concrete modular cells.
