Abstract:
Existing design procedures for columns subjected to axial loads and biaxial moments are basically hit-and-miss and thus much experience is required before a structural designer can use these procedures effectively. Two new design procedures are presented herein. Column dimensions are obtained in one procedure and the reinforcement ratio is obtained in the other procedure. All other design parameters are given for each case. The procedures converge very rapidly and could be regarded as optimizing in that the final designs lie on the interaction surface itself. The existing mathmatical techniques for establishing the shape of the interaction surface were not suitable in a iterative procedure and thus a radial contour approach has been developed.
