Abstract:
Throughout the past decade there have been significant advances in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for condition assessment of concrete structures. This newer generation of non-destructive test procedures allow for relatively rapid and reliable assessment of deterioration. These nondestructive evaluation techniques for condition assessment are of considerable value to engineers involved in the repair and rehabilitation of the nation's infrastructure. This paper briefly summarizes selected non- destructive evaluation techniques that can be used for condition assessment of concrete structures. The relative merits of various NDE methods are discussed from the experience gained in the conduct of field studies. It is emphasized that no single NDE method is applicable and practical in all cases. The practical and most effective approach to condition assessment is to use a variety of testing techniques to yield complementary information.
