Abstract:
In Marseilles, France, the Town Hall is four separate structures, with a mix of architectural styles, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In early 1994, some of the facades began to develop structural problems caused in part by a nearby underground parking garage. A number of solutions were tested before horizontal solid compaction was chosen to strengthen the foundations. In addition, a special reinforcing girdle was wrapped around the outside of the foundations.
