Abstract:
This investigation concerns performance of two types of air-entraining admixtures in concrete containing higher-than-normal amounts of soluble afkaties. The high available-alkali levels were produced by increasing the amount of a Class C fIy ash, which has a high soluble alkali content. Data are also supplied showing the effect qf alkali content from Portland cement on the air-void system. Air-entraining admixtures were evaluated on the basis of their capacity to produce high-quality air-void parameters to insure better potential freeze-thaw durability of hardened concrete. The products containing neutralized VIIISO~ resin demonstrated a positive correlation between soluble alkali content and increased average chord intercept. Air-void parameters of the concrete containing specific types of suffonated hydrocarbons were considerably less affected by the available alkali contents.
