Abstract:
Seven identical simply supported reinforced concrete beams were tested with loads applied through loading plates of varying widths. The measured inelastic deformations as affected by the width of the loading plate are compared with those computed by analytical and empirical methods. It is concluded from these results that the inelastlc deformations of reinforced concrete hinging re-igions are adversely influenced by a narrow width of loading plate as reflected by the nominal vertical bearing stresses on the concrete under the plate, especially when these stresses are larger than IO percent of the cylinder crushing strength of concrete.
