Abstract:
The influence of age and mix proportions on the autogenous healing of mortars were studied. A complete evaluation of the nature and extent of the recovery was made possible by comparison with the properties of both "fresh" and fractured mortars. The degree of fracture was kept constant by loading specimens to strength failure. The ability of a material to reheal was also investigated. For each of the 400 tests conducted, strength and stress-strain relationships up to strength failure were determined. Full recovery in strength was possible at all ages, however healed materials behaved in a more brittle manner. Mix proportions were found to have an effect on percentage healing, but did not influence the ability of the material to heal to strength values of the equivalent "fresh."
