Abstract:
Experiments with 18 spirally prestressed concrete cylinders are discribed. Spiral prestressing volume was 1.9 percent of concrete volume and initial laterla stress was 2100 psi (148 kg/cm^2). Specimens were subjected to sustained axial stresses from 17 to 83 percent of ultimate for up to 183 days. Strength was increased up to 19 percent by exposure to triaxial stress and reached 29.6 ksi (2080 kg/cm^2). Creep rupture is likely at axial stress greater than 80 percent of short-itme ultimate strength but specimens at 73 percent and 60 percent of ultimate were safe from creep rupture. Working stress of 8 ksi (562 kg/cm^3) appears feasible.
