Abstract:
The analysis of a helicoidal staircase involves torsional moments as well as bending moments and shears and is consequently somewhat more difficult than that of a straight staircase. However, if the staircase is reduced to its horizontal projection, the problem becomes quite tractable since it resolves itself into that of a Axed-end, curved beam loaded normal to its plane of curvature. This paper covers determination of the bending moment, torsional shearing stresses, shear reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement, and design at the supports.
