Abstract:
Analysis of many three-dimensional monolithic structures require information as to the torsional ridgidity of the elements of which they are constructed. Because of ridgid connections at the ends, warping of the members is restricted and bending stresses are induced with the torsion. For this reason, the elementary theory of torsion cannot be applied. In this paper the effect of end restraint on the torsional ridgidity of rectangular slabs has been analyzed, The magnitude of the stiffening effect is found to vary with length-width ratio of the slab. For square slabs, end fixity increases the ridgidity by 80 percent. Even for slabs with length-width ratios of 6, the ridgidity is increased by 8 percent. Experimental data are also presented, showing good agreement with the analytical results.
