Abstract:
This paper supplements the report of the American Society of Civil Engineers' subcommitte on thin shells by illustrating more fully the possiblities of thin shell construction. Examples of completed and proposed structures are given and dimensional data are presented in tabular form. Roof structures consisting of thin membranes of reinforced concrete, curved in one or more directions, are of quite recent origin, but their development has been rapid and they offer important possiblities for economical construction where loads are principally distributed loads due to dead weight, wind, and snow loading.
