Abstract:
One common durability problem is corrosion of reinforcement in structural concrete, particularly in bridges, parking garages, and coastal structures. A variety of measures can be employed to improve the durability of structural concrete, including a low water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm), mineral and chemical admixtures, epoxy-coated and/or stainless-steel reinforcement, protective surface sealers, or cathodic protection. Very little research has been performed to determine the ability of combinations of mineral admixtures with chemical corrosion inhibitors to prevent the corrosion of reinforcement in concrete. This article presents the results of a literature review of the extensive previous research on individual mineral and chemical durability enhancing admixtures in structural concrete.
