Abstract:
This paper presents experimental tests on seven large-scale one-way deck slabs used to investigate the effect that high-strength concrete and external limited prestressing have on the punching shear strength of slabs. Prediction equations of the ACI Code and Eurocode 2, as well as a suggested equation based on a shear friction model, are used for comparison with the test results. The validity of these equations when incorporating high-strength concrete and the effect of external limited prestressing is assessed. The paper concludes that the ACI Code equation for punching shear could be used for prestressing values less than the specified lower limits. Both the ACI and Eurocode equations do not give consistent results for high-strength concrete when using the same angle of shear-failure plane for normal-strength concrete. The suggested shear friction equation could be used with concrete strength higher than the limits specified in the codes.
