Abstract:
This article describes some of the properties of a type of reinforcing steel that has been introduced into the United States. It is marked as ASTM A 615, Grade 420 material, new-billet steel, but is significantly different in some respects than other steels meeting that specification. It is a heat-treated steel with high ductility and a relatively low carbon content. As compared to usual bars, the stress-strain properties are unusual. There is a distinct reduction in the slope of the curve, at about 90% of the yield stress and the ultimate strength/yield strength averaged 1.33 while the A 615 specification leads one to expect a ratio of about 1.5.
