Abstract:
This research project investigated the lateral performance and suitability of shotcrete as a means to retrofit bridge columns for improved flexural ductility and shear strength. The focus of the project was to study the lateral performance of reinforced shotcrete jackets, compare this with cast-in-place concrete jackets, and assess the confinement effectiveness of the jackets. Experimental testing of bridge columns in both single and double curvature demonstrated the efficacy of shotcrete jacketing in developing supplemental confinement and shear resistance in reinforced concrete bridge columns. The results of the research and some conclusions are presented herein.
