Abstract:
Modern composites exhibit significant advantages, such as high resistance to corrosion, over common construction materials. The range of composite applications in construction is steadily increasing as recent advances help to reduce cost. In this paper, pultruded rods of fiberglass reinforced plastic used as reinforcement in concrete construction are discussed. In this context, composite reinforcing bars appear particularly attractive as a cost-effective solution to concrete deterioration problems caused by corrosion of the steel reinforcement. Properties of steel and composite reinforcements are presented to establish a detailed comparison between the two products. Specific applications are also identified in which composite reinforcing bars seem advantageous over steel.
