Abstract:
Describes investigation of an historic concrete landmark, design of repairs necessary for its restoration, and the repair work done. After loose and defective concrete was removed and corroded reinforcement was cleaned by sandblasting, shallow patches were made with polymer-modified portland cement/sand mortars and deeper patches with gun-applied fine aggregate concrete. New balusters were cast and installed. The finished worked was covered with an integral-color acrylic-modified cementitious coating that, after weathering, will match the color, texture, and reflectivity of the existing coating prior to restoration.
