Abstract:
Advances in concrete technology over the past several years have led to the practical use of concretes with low water-cementitious material ratios that are prone to early age cracking unless special precautions are taken. The concepts of internal curing, based on the use of pre-saturated lightweight aggregate or superabsorbent polymers, and internal sealing, based on the use of water-soluble chemicals that reduce water evaporation, are discussed with a focus on the mitigation of autogenous shrinkage.
