Abstract:
The concrete compressive strength versus the water-cement ratio relationship as handled in ACI 211, "Standard Practice for Selecting Proportions," is not applicable for concretes modified by silica fume, superplasticizers, or any other admixture, with the exception of air-entraining admixtures, although use of such modified concretes is increasing. This paper suggests numerical extensions of the Abram's formula to: high-strength concretes; flexural strength; Type I and III cements; more precise consideration of the air content between 1 and 25 percent; and development of strength relationships for concretes containing chemical or mineral admixtures, or nonportland cements. With these extensions, the method for proportioning for strength covers practically all concrete compositions. The development of a software package implementing the proposed extensions is in progress.
