Abstract:
In Brazil, after less than 10 years in service, four centrifugally-cast concrete posts supporting mobile phone antennas have collapsed. In some cases, because 2nd order and dynamic effects were ignored, the original design of the reinforcement in the posts was inadequate, but this could not explain the failures that occurred at loads significantly below the design loads. Further investigation revealed that the failures were caused by degradation of the joint between the post’s precast segments due to the cyclic effects of wind loading. The investigation, development of a repair method using carbon fiber, and plans to reinforce the posts that remain in service are described in this article.
