Abstract:
Bridge deck cracking and durability are very important issues in states all across North America. Protection of this most significant investment is an important budget consideration to officials in State Highway Departments. This paper describes the immediate reaction of the Maryland State Highway Administration to deck curing and shrinkage problems that developed during construction of the Nanticoke River Bridge and an adjacent bridge over Route 331 and the DP&L Railroad. Curing procedures were revised to provide a more durable bridge deck on this project and, as a result, on future projects.
