Abstract:
In the past, structures were designed in such a way that one-dimensional bearings such as the rocker or roller-type devices could accommodate the forces between the superstructure and substructure. Today's curved girder, post-tensioned, and cable-stayed structures, to name a few, require much more versatility from a bearing assembly. The paper discusses several case histories on which unusual and arduous design criteria were developed at points of bearing. Concepts such as uplift, rotation in plan, seismic design, flexible guiding, replaceability, and high horizontal forces are described in detail as they apply to various structures. Testing procedures and requirements on specific projects are also examined and evaluated.
