Abstract:
An extensive laboratory trial mix testing program was conducted for the selection of concrete mix proportions for a low-shrink backfill intended for placement behind the steel tunnel liner serving as an 8 ft. diameter water main, and subjected to several unique project placement restrictions. Tests were performed on initial slump, slump retention, temperature rise, shrinkage, and compressive strengths. The trial mix testing program required several iterations. A total of 17 concrete mixes were tested. The performance of the selected mix during construction is summarized.
