Abstract:
The spacing factor L model and its application are shown to have serious shortcomings for predicting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. The recently developed mean spacing s model, on the other hand, is shown to provide a realistic and simple approach for determining the adequacy of the air-void system with respect to freeze-thaw durability. This article provides relevant data and makes the case for further development and use of the mean spacing model approach in the routine characterization of the air-void system in hardened concrete.
