Abstract:
The ring slab or ring box girder structure is a type of design chosen for this circular highway interchange in Fuzhou, China. The circular interchange designed as a monolithic closed ring possesses several advantages over a jointed structure. There are no expansion joints to maintain, there is just one bearing point on the top of each bent instead of two, and the continuity provides for a more efficient use of material. As the first reinforced concrete closed monolithic ring slab in China, the structure was awarded the Advance Prize of Science and Technology from Fujian Province in 1991.
