Abstract:
Vertical No. 6 bars in a wall were fabricated with a right-angle bend 6 in. (150 mm) from the top of a wall so they could dowel into a small slab that sits on top of the wall. The forms extended several feet above the top-of-wall elevation when the last lift of the wall was to be placed, so the ironworkers tied the bars with the tails parallel to the face of the wall. Now the protruding section of the embedded bars must be rotated 90 degrees (that is, torqued around the centerline of the bar) so the tails are perpendicular to the wall. Is there any guidance on whether the ACI Building Code requirements permit this, and if so, what precautions should be taken?
