Abstract:
As the nation’s transportation infrastructure ages, federal, state and local officials are faced with balancing the need to rehabilitate structures to enable them to accommodate modern loads and insure safety with a desire to preserve their character and place in the urban landscape. This challenge was met directly in designing the rehabilitation of the Baltimore Street Bridge, a three-span reinforced concrete open spandrel arch bridge. Because federal funds were to be used in this project, provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act called for a historical investigation of the bridge.
