Abstract:
This article focuses on (1) the characteristics of shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC) and its performance in bridge decks of the Ohio Turnpike Commission (OTC) and the New York Thruway Authority (NYTA), and (2) on a laboratory testing program to access the properties of SCC. The performance of the OTC bridge decks using SCC has been outstanding; however, the NYTA has experienced significant scaling problems with their SCC decks. Results of the laboratory concrete mixture design, property evaluation, and sensitivity testing verified that SCC mixtures should be viable mixtures for bridge decks to reduce shrinkage cracking.
