Abstract:
With recent advances in construction techniques and equipment, owners and builders have the opportunity to achieve dramatic schedule and cost improvements in the construction and rehabilitation of concrete structures. The New York State Department of Transportation allows contractors to submit Value Engineering Contract Proposals (VECP). In this project, the southbound approaches of the Robert Moses Causeway on Long Island were reconstructed. Reconstruction took place from the water to speed bridge construction, minimize congestion on the roads, and eliminate the need for extensive on-site formwork. The superstructure for each bridge approach was prefabricated as a series of precast, prestressed four-stem units, which were floated to the site and erected as complete spans, including deck and supporting elements.
