Abstract:
An improved energy absorption capability or toughness is an important property of fiber reinforced shotcrete. This property is often measured by conducting a standardized flexural toughness test on a beam specimen in third-point bending under a slow (static) rate of load application. In mining and tunneling applications, however, loads may be applied at very high rates such as those that occur during rock-burst and blasting, and toughness of fiber reinforced shotcrete under these conditions, though expected to be different, has not been well quantified. Proper impact tests are needed to understand the behavior of shotcrete in these applications. In this study, toughness of wet-mix shotcrete reinforced with five different types of fibers was measured under impact conditions by testing beam specimens.
