Abstract:
The freeze-thaw durability of air-entrained concrete containing superplasticizers has been evaluated in a number of studies. Typical findings of these studies with regard to the correlation between air-void system parameters and freeze-thaw durability are summarized. The results of the studies show that superplasticized concretes can be freeze-thaw durable despite their tendency to have spacing factors that are greater than the ACI recommended maximum limit of 0.008-in. (0.20-mm). Test data show that for durable superplasticized concretes, two out of every three had spacing factors greater than the 0.008 in. (0.20 mm) limit. The test data also show that virtually all the concretes with adequate resistance under freeze-thaw testing had specific surface values less than the ACI recommended minimum of 600 in.ý/in.3 (24 mmý /mm3). These results should be considered when specifying air-void system parameters for superplasticized concretes.
