Abstract:
Seven specimens simulating the behavior of beam reinforcement anchored by 90-deg standard hooks inside an exterior beam-column connection were tested under pullout forces to determine hook strength and constitutive behavior. Effects of the anchored bar diameter, confinement of the joint, and compressive strength of concrete on the hook behavior were studied experimentally. Empirical expressions were developed for the hook pullout force-slip relationship, and they were incorporated into an analytical model for predicting the overall pullout behavior of reinforcing bars developed and hooked in the exterior joints. This model was applied for evaluating the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-83) requirements for development of standard hooks in tension.
