Abstract:
Compares a recently introduced approximate P-delta method for sway structures designed by load and resistance factor design principles with a wide variety of column arrangements and loadings analyzed by a finite element method or tested in the laboratory. A full framework is also examined by the new technique as well as the ACI moment magnifier approach. It is concluded that the proposed P-delta method gives results comparable with those of other existing P-delta procedures and thus represents a viable and safe alternative for the design of members in sway structures.
