Abstract:
Paper investigates the feasibility of constructing post-tensioned masonry panels using various configurations of steel strands. The flexural strength behavior of these panels is compared with the behavior of panels that have the same dimension but are reinforced with conventional steel bars. Test results suggest that both reinforced and post-tensioned masonry panels behave as ductile structural elements. The masonry design code presently assumes that masonry is a brittle material and has incorporated a large factor of safety that may not be necessary. The current procedure can be used as a practical construction method that may give superior performance in durability and load capacity and may result in a more economical design.
